Description
Day 1° Departure from Quito – Quilotoa
Early in the morning, we will pick up the tourists at their respective hotels to start the trip to the Quilotoa volcano, having two stops along the way in Saquisili and Pujili. We will continue the road to our destination through Pujilí, until we reach the paramo zone, at an altitude of 3000 metres, and cross the Toachi canyon, a natural creation due to the lava that descended from the Quilotoa, to Zumbahua, an indigenous population that are custodians of the volcano. Once we cross Zumbahua, we will arrive at our destination in about 20 minutes.
Arriving at the entrance to the Quilotoa lagoon, we can observe the crater from above, and then walk to the shore of the lagoon, where you can take a boat ride, kayak or just enjoy the scenery. Geologic studies have shown evidence that Quilotoa has produced at least 8 large explosive eruptions during the past 200,000 years at intervals of 10,000-14,000 years.
Reports of historical eruptions from the caldera lake are not certain. At present, the Quilotoa volcano is active, but not erupting. It has fumaroles at the bottom of the lake and hot springs on the eastern flank.
The ascent can be done on foot or you can rent mules for 8USD. Upon arrival at the summit, you can lunch in one of the restaurants inside or just rest after the ascent and then drive back to Quito, where you will be around 6 pm approximately.
Lunch not included.
After that will return to Quito and their respective hotels or starting point.
